Systematic Review of Herbs and Dietary Supplements for Glycemic Control in Diabetes

The objective of this research is to conduct a systematic review of the efficacy of herbal treatments as well asvitamin/mineral supplements for glucose control in patients with diabetes.
Diabetes is a very predominant health concern, this disease is affecting 16 million persons just in U.S. causing long termcomplication and remains an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Diabetes is likely to become even more prevalent over the coming decade. So the purpose of this study is to know about theuse of complementary and alternative medicine among the general people. In general scientific literature on the efficacy of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) in the treatment of diabetesis relatively sparse and heterogeneous. Most of the literature, however, has focused on herbs or others dietary supplements, and other techniques as massages therapies, biofeedback, relaxation, yoga,alternative dietary/lifestyle modifications. Many modern pharmaceuticals used in conventional medicine today also have natural plant origins. However, there is relatively little known regardingefficacy and safety of herb and other dietary supplements for diabetes.
Research design and methods
There were contacted experts in the field to identity studies. There were not included supplements madefrom animal components, there were also didn’t include soluble fiber supplements. In the studies were included subjects with impaired glucose tolerance or those specifically at risk for diabetes (e.g.,older people, sedentary people, obese people with a family history diabetes). A total of 25 single herbs were studied among 11 combination herbs and 9 vitamin/mineral supplements as potential therapyfor diabetes.
